The How: Nailing These Looks at Home

You don’t need a salon trip to achieve these trends (though we wouldn’t blame you if you wanted to treat yourself!). If you’re feeling creative and want to DIY your autumn nails, here’s how you can get started.

Choose Your Tools:
Nail art brushes, dotting tools, or even toothpicks can help with intricate designs. For those matte velvet looks, don’t forget to invest in a good matte topcoat such as Mylee Matte No-Wipe Top Coat

Practice Makes Perfect:
Some designs, like marble or ombré, take a little practice. If you’re just getting started, try working on simple shapes or accent nails first, and build from there. Sponges are a great way to start – Mylee have a dual ended sponge tool that’s perfect fro beginners!

DIY Gold Leaf:
Gold leaf accents are surprisingly easy to do at home. Just pick up some gold foil sheets , apply them while your polish is still tacky, and seal with a topcoat.

Nail Stickers & Decals:
If freehand painting isn’t your thing, nail stickers or decals are a quick fix for achieving a trendy look. You can easily find gold leaf or jewel-tone stickers to add a pop of style to any base colour. Check out these beautiful marble effect stickers or make your nails more jazzy by adding some moon, star and light details.

Where to Get the Perfect Autumn Nails

As fun as at-home manicures are, sometimes you just can’t beat a professional job. If you’re looking to splurge on the perfect autumn mani, book an appointment at your local nail salon. Many places offer seasonal specials or custom designs to reflect these trends.

If you’re more of an online shopper, though, you’re in luck! Brands like OPI, Essie, and Sally Hansen have already launched their fall 2024 collections, featuring gorgeous shades inspired by the season. Whether you’re picking up a bottle at the drugstore or browsing high-end nail brands, you’ve got plenty of options.

FAQ: Can Short Nails Pull Off These Autumn Trends?

Absolutely! You don’t need long nails to rock these looks. Trends like earthy neutrals or matte finishes look fantastic on short nails. Even more intricate designs, like gold leaf accents or marble patterns, can be adapted to shorter lengths without losing their charm. So yes, short nails can be just as stylish and on-trend!

Pro Tip: Keep Your Nails Healthy This Fall

The cooler temps of fall can dry out your nails, so take care of them. To keep them healthy:

  • Use cuticle oil regularly – OPI Repair Mode and Cuccio Naturale Sweet Almond Cuticle Oil are my favourite right now.
  • Lemon – This is my biggest tip. I always heard about lemon being good for your nails but I didn’t realise how good. Make a nail bath with oil and lemon for super strong long nails!
  • Moisturise your hands with a good cream to combat dryness. Weleda Citrus Hand and Nail Cream is super thick and moisturising , great for the winter months and also smells very fresh.
  • Take breaks between manicures to let your nails breathe.
  • Always apply a strengthening base coat if you notice any brittleness. My current favourite is the OPI Nail Envy but if you would prefer something more affordable the Sally Hansen Hard As Nails also does a great job too!
  • File your nails regularly – Filing with a glass nail, particularly on the sides of my nails helped keep stray hang nails from occurring which causes nails to break or be cut short.
  • Builder Gel – I get my nails done professionally, however when I have time I occasionally will do them myself. This is amazing for keeping them strong and prevents nail biting!
